Handy Tips

Stains can be treated and removed in a variety of ways, depending on the substance doing the staining, the substance stained and the age of the stain.  For some stains you may only need to apply a single ingredients and then leave it to do its work. For liquid stains you need to press a towel, plain not coloured onto the area to absorb the liquid.  Do not rub or scrub, work from outer to inner of stain.Whatever type of stain that you are treating always bear in mind the material that you are treating.

  • Blood

For fresh stains, sponge the area immediately with cold water.  If this is not enough to treat it, pour soda water over the stained area and blot quickly with a towel, repeat the process until all traces of stain have disappeared.

  • Bubble Gum

Add eucalyptus oil to a cloth and dab at the area, then scrap away the gum with a knife

  • Cosmetics

Most cosmetics stains will come away if you dab them with a solution of one tablespoon of borax dissolved in a little hot water and then add half a cup of water.

  • Grease

Sprinkle flour or talc over the stain and leave for several hours.  Vacuum up and then blot with a damp cloth, sprinkle with eucalyptus oil.

  • Red Wine

Without delay pour white wine ove the stained area.  Then mop up with towelling before dousing with soda water until all traces of stain has disappeared.  Apply soda water immediately if no white wine available.

  • Soft Drinks

Spray with soda water, and press towelling into area to absorb all the liquid.  If a stain remains, dab at it with a cloth dipped in a solution of one tablespoon of borax and half cup of water.

  • Tea/Coffee

Spray with soda water, then mop up liquid with towelling. Repeat treatment until all traces of stains have disappeared.

  • Urine

Clean up as much urine as possible with towelling.  Then sprinkle liberally with baking soda, with three drops of eucalyptus oil or tea tree essential oil added. Allow this to absorb what urine is left. Then vacuum up, and sponge with white vinegar and water to deodorize further and treat stain.

  • Wax

If the wax is still soft, pack ice cubes around it so that it hardens.  Then scrap it away with a knife.  To remove any bits, place sheets of absorbent paper on top and use a warm iron to dab at the paper over the stain.  Keep turning or replacing the paper as the wax comes away onto it.
